Potential target group:By Munya Gatawa

Our target audience for this documentary are going to be both male and females students in social groups D, C1C2 as it is mainly educational institutions attended by students in these social group’s that behavioural issues are highlighted in the media, we will also target those that work in education institutes as we feel our documentary will be relevant to them, and feel that us having a focal target group will make the publicising of the product easy.

Week 9

Although we are coming to the end of our production, we still need to finish our voice over for our documentry and also find an ideal background soundtrack for our documentry. Once they have been done then all we have to concentrate on is our individual posters and Radio trailers.

Score Music - Risha Jethwa

Score music

For our five minute documentary we used a non-diegetic soundtrack from the album ‘Human Documentaries’. We choose this particular soundtrack ‘Industrious’ because it creates a certain atmosphere about student behaviour declining. The sound used has and interesting elements as it is fast and up beating, from this the key instrument used is a keyboard as it keeps the music in pace.

Interestingly whilst soundtrack is play the voiceover also helps direct the narrative of the documentary. This shows that both types of sounds show a similar balance as it equal. In this case the soundtrack shows a lot of emotions as it draws the audience towards the documentary and engages them constantly.

Throughout the five minute documentary other sound elements have been used such as ambient and diegetic sound. The reason for this is because is captures the moment of students and there surrounding around them.

Originally we planned to use different types of sound and music for our documentary, this because we feels it helps break down certain issues raised and also helps focus on the key topic of student behaviour declining.

Interview Profile - Risha Jethwa

The interviewers shown in the documentary are:

Andrew Rosindell (MP for Romford)
James Smith (Student of Politics)
Janette May (Parent)
Mark Down (Student)
Mr Mishkin (Teacher)

The following interviewees above play an important role as they give their own perspective and opinion on the documentary about student behaviour. We have chosen these people because their role are linked with the topic student behaviour, most importantly because certain interviewees such as teacher, parent and students have a broader knowledge and experience about student behaviour and schools.

Location notes - Risha Jethwa

Location notes

The locations set for the documentary are:

Havering College – Parent and Students interview

House of Parliament – MP Romford and Future MP interview

Loxford School of Science and Technology – Teacher interview

Lucilla Uniform Shop

The main part of our documentary will be located in the following locations above. We picked this as a group as we felt it would help the audience get the impression that all members and speakers will have a certain setting to match their profession. Another reason we had chosen the following location is because it suggests the character background, lifestyle, social class which will be represented through the mise-en-scene and cinematography.

Codes and Conventions - Risha Jethwa

Codes and Convention

As a group we decided to research the elements behind a documentary, however from this research we will identify the important features and gain more ideas for our documentary when planning and producing.

Firstly as part of our research we defined what a documentary is, as it will help us identify the aspects. A documentary is a film or TV program presenting the facts about a person or event. Most importantly the objective of a documentary is to emphasizing or express things as perceived without distortion of personal feelings, insertion of fictional matter, or interpretation.

Most importantly documentaries can be divided up into many genres for instances frequency, threshold, unambiguity, meaningfulness, consonance, unexpectedness, continuity, composition, reference to elite person and nations, personalisation, negativity and finally visulisation. From this from our documentary topic is based on ‘Is student behaviour declining in secondary schools?’ The appropriate news value our documentary fits into is consonance, continuity and negativity. The reason for this is because consonance meets the expectations of media, secondly continuity shows that once and event has been covered, it is convenient to cover it some more as it shows a running story. Finally negativity shows that bad news is good news. This shows that all these news values are key elements to a documentary category.

Another reason is that documentaries have important conventions such as a voiceover, interview, titles, narrative, sub-heading, statistics and facts and figures. In this case these conventions allow the documentary to be fun, interesting and educational to watch. Despite this many conventions also engage the audience as the documentary become more appealing, however this is done by titles, interviews and sub-heading. This shows that titles and headings become more attractive by the appearance and colour as it maybe bold, italic or underlined.

Week 8

We have now filmed all the interviews we were able to arrange ... during the next lessons, the footage will be edited and put together. However even though we have loads of footage, we still need some more cutaways. We will be filming for more cutaways during this week so that we have a wider range of cutaways to use in the documentary.

Saturday 21 November 2009

Week 7

Thursday 19th November

As a group we went to the Houses of Parliament and interviewed Andrew Rosindell, the MP of Romford. The interview went well and we didn’t encounter any problems … we filmed the interview twice just to be on the safe side and make sure we had enough footage to play around with in the editing suite.

This picture was taken whilst the interview was taking place.

This group picture was taken after the interview was done.

We were also able to interview Andrew Rosindell's assistant who was present at the time.

Thursday 12 November 2009

Week 6

Hey guys we went to film our third interview today, the interview was of Mr Mishkin, a teacher. The interview was great because we didnt encounter any problems we was literally there for 20 minutes..anyway here are some pictures of us filming cutaways and others of us setting up the equipment before the interview. The pictures also show us making sure everything was correct during the filming.

Risha,Munya,Rizwana all helping each other to set up the equipment.

This is image basically shows Munya asking Mr Mishkin the interview questions.

Thursday 5 November 2009

Week 5

Since last weeks media lessons, we have been trying to arrange interviews. We have not been able to get any responses. We tried getting either a psychologist or a sociologist teaching at a degree level ... we contacted a number of universities and colleges that teach at degree levels too. However none of them got back to us .... we followed them up through phone and email and still were not able to hear from them.

We also tried getting hold of a head teacher but were also unsuccessful with this at the present moment. But we will still be trying to find a head teacher who would hopefully be able to help us.

Saturday 24 October 2009

Updates

We were finally able to arrange an interview with a teacher. After being unsuccessful in reaching them through phone, we decided to go to the school and ask the teacher in person rather that going through the school receptionist and not getting a response. This was done and the teacher agreed on helping us. The interview will take place soon and pictures will be taken showing us in action!

Wednesday 21 October 2009

Updates

For another possible interview, we were told to try and get someone from 'The Department for children, schools and families' ... we rang them up and told them the aim of our documentary and asked wether we would be able to arrange an interview with someone that could talk us through and provide us with more opinions and information. The receptionist suggested that we sent an email to them so that they could then pass on the email to someone that may be able to help us, so we did.

However, unfortunetly we did not recieve any response from 'The Department for children, schools and families' even after we rang back to follow up on the request.

Saturday 17 October 2009

Updates

Two students were interviewed today ... the first student we interviewed didnt go too well because the student didnt really answer the questions properly. The response recieved were lacking relevant information and were not clear. For this reason we decided to interview another student. The interview with the second student worked out better. The answers we got were better and more understandable with a clear opinion from the student.

Audience Review-Sunil Chandla

It is vital before any production process to develop a forecast of possible ideas that can be implemented into our documentary. For example by doing some research was vital, we had to produce a questionnaire in which would produce audience feedback on their own preferences when it comes to watching documentaries.

We surveyed around 30 individuals asking roughly 10 questions about themselves such as age, gender etc.., but we also asked about what they would like to see in documentaries?, if they are interested in them? And also what you would expect in our Documentary?

To make this a fair test we equally chose 15 boys and 15 girls, therefore the information we receive would not be biased to one specific gender. Although the age category varied as we had many more 18-21 category then 15-17 and 22+. This is because the majority of students are of this age and we began to realise that documentaries do not tend to be for younger students as it involves a lot of focus where as a mature student may learn from watching documentaries and relate to them.

We then asked what they would/should see in a documentary. The response was mainly focused on 4 key elements. They were voice-over, cutaways, interviews and finally news paper headlines. Majority of course suggested interviews as they make or break the documentary. We then knew that interviews were vital to gain.

We also asked whether are topic is relevant to today’s society and how we should show this. The response was fairly optimistic but some said that although there are some bad students the majority are well behaved and that it doesn’t appeal to everyone. Another response that it would be a good area of investigation but getting students in the act of being bad would be impossible therefore we then had to think how we can show bad behaviour using other methods.

We ended with the question with, is there anything specific you would like to see? Some explained how they would like to see the opinions of not just teachers but students themselves, they also wanted to see how maybe someone important can resolve this matter.

In conclusion, as a group we knew that getting interviews was vital and that also cutaways would be a great way to make the documentary more appealing. Therefore the audience review proved to be a success in giving ideas for our own documentary.

Audience Review - Munya Gatawa

Audience review

The importance of an audience review to any institution or production can not be stressed any further as it is they the audience who will be the end-users of the product, that is why before we began to create our documentary we decided it was crucial we carried out some audience research in the form of questionnaires which we handed out and got feedback from. The following are the questions asked and the feed back we received from the audience:

Q1.What gender are you?

Response:

We handed out 30 questionnaire sheet’s so it were essential for us to have an equal amount of males and females, so we asked 15 males and 15 females to take part in our audience review.

Q2. What age category do you fit into?

Response:

  • Four out of the thirty people we interviewed were between the ages of 15-17.
  • Fourteen of the thirty participants were between the ages of 18-21.
  • And 12 of the thirty people said that they were aged 22 and over.

Q.3What the main features you look for in a documentary? I.e cutaways, titles, narration

Response:

For this question we gave the audience options to make it easier for them to have an idea of what we were asking, the majority of the audience said that they expected to see codes and conventions such as: Cutaways, voice-over narration, Facts and figures, score music and titles.

However the minority said that they expected to see a voice-over narration and facts and figures.

Q.4 Do you feel that the topic of student behaviour is relevant in today’s society? Please explain.

Response:

They all inclined that student behaviour were relevant in today’s society, and all agreed that this was down to the decline in student behaviour.

Q.5 What do you expect to be explored within this documentary?

Their answer’s varied and these were their responses: “why there is a decline in student behaviour”, “What is being done about the decline”, “Interviews with students and members of institutions such as teachers and governors”.

Q.6 Are there any suggestions for other issues you would like to see explored in the documentary?

Responses: Bullying, racism, comparison between the different races on behaviour

Audience Review - Risha Jethwa

Audience review

The results from the questionnaire show us and clear understanding of the audience opinions in a documentary. From this we have discovered what elements and conventions will help us succeed in our documentary, however we have also identified relevant questions and information which will help us proceed in the right track.

From the first question the results show and equal percent of males and females enjoy watching a documentary. In this case the questionnaire was handed out to thirty individuals which where both genders males and females, although from this feed back both fifteen males and females show a keen interest in the topic.

The second question focuses on the age category. As you may notice the highest percent was 18-22. The reason for this is because young adults enjoy watching documentaries, where as the age category 15-17 have a lower percent as they least enjoy documentaries. From these results the age groups have been divided into certain groups such as the teenagers, young adults and adults. Despite this you may notice that the age group 18-22 show more of an interest because they have the knowledge and ability to learn something new, Where as the category 22+ also shows similarities with the age group18-22.

The results shown for the third question suggests the main features of a documentary. As a result the highest feature of a documentary is an interview, however many agreed that facts and figures and a voice over give more information and sources on the documentary. This is because facts and figures increase the knowledge. Another reason is a voice over helps direct and narrates the audience about the documentary. A small percent all believed to see cutaways in the documentary as it makes it more interesting and exciting to watch.

The feed back shows from question four showed a high percent of the topic student behaviour. This is because student behaviour has become a big issue in today society as many people are unaware of the situation. Another response from the audience believes that outcome of research can be beneficial to the educational system. From this the results show that the target audience have high expectation of the topic student behaviour as it is involved in many day to day lives.

The response from the fifth questions shows that student behaviour should be explored in many ways for instance classroom behaviour, uniforms, education departments and many more. Interestingly within this documentary the feed back shown from the audience believe that interviews with students and class observations can help the effect of student behaviour.

The final question explores any other issues the audience will like to raise. The response shown for this was diversity of different ethnic backgrounds, racism, bullying and verbal abuse. This shows that in many secondary schools certain issues such as bullying and racism have a big impact on people as it affects them in person and their school life.

In conclusion all the questions and feed back from the target audience has helped make the documentary more appealing as it give us suggestion and idea’s to make it more interesting.

Audience Review - Rizwana Jawid

The pre-documentary questionnaire was designed to help us understand what our target audience would expect to see be explored in our documentary. By getting the audience’s opinion on what they thought would make a good documentary and the issues they believed should be explored in the documentary, we could base our documentary on those elements and issues to the best of our ability.

The questionnaire was handed out to thirty individuals, fifteen of these being females and fifteen males. We chose to hand this out to fifteen females and fifteen males to keep a neutral response from the audience and make sure that the results were fair and unbiased.

The second question was set out for us to see what age category each person fits into and what their opinions were. This was done do that us as a group could see the responses of each of the individuals that were given the questionnaire based on their age and what they would expect to see and be discussed.

The next question that was asked was based on what main features of a documentary the audience would count on seeing. The majority of the audience responded saying that the main features that make up a documentary which they want to see be included are interviews, facts and figures and the voiceover providing additional informative information based on the topic. A minority of the responses received said that cut-ways were the main aspects that make up a documentary and the titles.

The next question was based on the relevance of the topic. A high percentage of the audience said that the topic of student behaviour is relevant in today’s society as student behaviour is on a decline. Another reason why they saw this topic being relevant is because students today do not have respect for teachers and elders. An additional answer from the target audience was that they believe that the topic could then be used to improve the education system.

The issues that should be explored in this documentary, according to the audience who answered the questionnaire are student behaviour, the methods that should be implemented into the education system to show improvement is student behaviour and achievement, what institutions are there to support students that require additional help to improve their behaviour, interactions inside and outside the class and class observations.

The last question was designed to understand what else the audience would like to see be explored in the documentary. The responses received were racism, bullying, verbal abuse, diversity of different ethnic backgrounds.

All the responses received from the questionnaire will be used and taken into consideration as to what we should include in the questionnaire.

Cut-away shot ideas

We are planning on filming our cut-away shots within the next week or so. The ideas for the shots are:

1) Students during lesson - To show behaviour within the class.
For this cut-away we will be using a establishing shot to be able to show the whole class of students during lesson.

2) Students after school - Showing their behaviour, once again but out of class.
A wide shot is going to be used to show a wider view of student behaviour outside of school hours.

3) News paper articles on the decline behaviour and achievement
Rostrum camera shots showing the headings of articles.

4) Uniform shops - To link in with the arguement whether uniform has a impact on student behaviour

At the moment these are the cut-aways we were able to come up with. Once we have decided on some more cut-aways, they will be added to this list.

Updates

We have been trying to arrange interviews with people who we thought would be able to discuss the topic we have chosen to do for the documentary.

We rang up schools to arrange interviews with teachers and head teachers. At the point we were unable to directly speak to these individuals however we were told that our message would be passed on to them and they would get back to us with an answer in wether they would be interested to help us out or not.

Updates

Munya designed the pre-documentary questionnaire which we handed out to 30 people. 15 of these were females and 15 of them were males. Once we get the questionnaire back, the results will be blogged.

Framing a Interview - The Rule of Two Thirds - Rizwana Jawid

The rule of two thirds is a concept in film and video production where the framing of the scene is divided into nine imaginary fragments. The image above shows an example of how the frame is divided. When framing an interview, it is necessary to make sure that there is not too much head room and that the main focus of the scene is taking up two thirds of the screen. The camera should be positioned so that the interviewee in the documentary does not have direct eye contact with the camera.

Another issue that needs to be taken into consideration is that the background which is being used should not be distracting the main focus of the shot. For example, plant pots sticking out from behind the interviewee’s head.

  • Permanent exclusions have fallen by 7% down to 8,680.

  • 4 times as many boys as girls were permanently excluded.

  • Long term pattern exclusions show that there are many more short-term exclusions of 3 days or less and many fewer permanent exclusions down 29% since 1997.

  • Majority of these are in secondary schools.

  • Exclusion levels now equivalent to more than 1% in 10 pupils.

Documentary Proposal Explaining Our Topic - Rizwana Jawid

As a group, we decided to base our documentary on the decline of student behavior and the effect it has on their achievement. We will also be focusing on whether having a school uniform has a impact on the way students behave. Does it encourage them to be more well behaved and disciplined? or Does it not have an impact on behavior and achievement at all?

Within this documentary we are planning on interviewing a number of people who will be able to provide us with more information on student behavior and the impact it has on a students exam results and whether other students are influenced by ones behavior.

We will visit local secondary schools and arrange interviews with the head teacher, teacher and parents. We also decided to speak to students to be able to view different perspectives of the main question.

Monday 28 September 2009

Week 2

As a group we have now decided on the topic that we are going to focus our documentary... during this week we are going to find people that we can interview ... we are also going to come up with questions that we can ask them ... the blog will be updated every time we have done a piece of work.

Sunday 27 September 2009

Change of idea

After doing bits of research for our topic, unemployment in the Asian male community, we found that the information was very limited. The focus of our topic was something that we would not be able to find out much information on. We also thought that we would not be able to find many people who would be willing to talk about the issue from experience. As the project is a documentary and we would need interviews, cut-aways and all the other features of a documentary, we didn’t think that the topic of unemployment rates in the Asian male community would allow us to be able to include all these features.

Therefore…

We decided to change the focus of our documentary to ‘Is student behaviour declining in secondary schools and what is being done about it?’ … This topic would allow us to be more focused. We brainstormed all the things we could include in the documentary and the possible speakers.

Documentary Proposal - Our first idea - Rizwana Jawid

The topic we decided to focus on for the documentary is the increases in the number of male unemployment rates. During this lesson we researched for statistics that showed recession having an impact on the male community. As the topic on male unemployment was too broad we narrowed down the focus on to Asian males, aged between 24-40.

Week 1

We created this group blog that will be used to show our progress through the coursework ... our ideas ... success ... the difficulties that we may face and our solutions and ways around the setbacks that we may come across.

During this week we also designated the roles of a director, camera man, sound person and editor to members in the group.

We will be coming up with possible ideas for our documentary that will be blogged to show progress
